There are many different types of plumbing pipes that can be used for a variety of purposes. If you are considering a new plumbing installation, it is important to find the right type for your home or business.
This article will go over what the different types are and how they work, including:
Standard Rigid Steel
Steel Pipe – Uses in water distribution, and there is usually no interior insulation to protect it from freezing.
Standard Rigid Plastic
PVC Pipe – Usually used for water lines and sewer systems. PVC is economical and can withstand extreme temperatures. It is also very easy to install without the use of tools or adhesives.
Polybutylene Pipe
Polybutylene is becoming obsolete due to health reasons and potential leaks that it can cause in your home or business.
It is a lightweight material that is easy to install and costs less than copper. It also does not hold moisture well, and as much as 5% of the pipe can allow water back into your home or business.
Ceramic
Ceramic does not conduct the heat from the surrounding area into your plumbing pipes, resulting in freezing if there is no insulation underneath.
Fiberglass
Fiberglass is not as strong as steel or PVC, making it more susceptible to bending and breaking. It is also not recommended for the water lines in your home or business.
Metal or Galvanized Steel
The metal pipe is made from metal pipes that are galvanized, which acts as a coating to protect the pipe from rust damage and corrosion. These pipes are best used for cold water systems that have no risk of freezing temperatures.
Stainless Steel
Very strong, expensive and difficult to install, stainless steel is commonly used in the marine industry.
Copper
The most common piping material used, copper, is very easy to install and allows for different ways to connect your plumbing pipes. It is also incredibly strong and will not freeze unless the temperature drops below 20 below. Copper pipe is not recommended for hot water supply lines due to its increased surface area that can lose heat.
Plastic
While plastic does not corrode, it is more susceptible to breaking and the risk of freezing temperatures. There is also the chance that plastic can give off harmful chemicals when it expands or becomes overheated.
Cast Iron
When cast iron pipes are used, you need to take caution because it can result in a backflow of toxic substances into your home and business if they are misconnected.
